March is here and so is a new episode of Acoustic Blend! This month we have a fresh installment of the covers series1, this time featuring tunes from the 70s and 80s (it’s a birthday week for me and I’m feeling nostalgic).
As a kid I used to record songs off of my Mickey Mouse record player (or the radio) onto cassette tape and then play them back while I introduced each song, while I recorded all of that on another cassette recorder. So putting this show together definitely brought back some of those memories.
Sarah Jarosz2 will lead off the hour with covers of U2 and Prince; from there we’ll be off and running with a surprising amount of banjo and mandolin, thanks to bands like The Arcadian Wild, Front Country, and The Wailin’ Jennys. A new discovery for me this month was Love Canon, a Virginia bluegrass outfit specializing in covers. They’ve been at it for about ten years and are definitely worth a listen.
I hope you enjoy the theme and find yourself singing along (and remembering the words!) to these fresh takes on classic songs.
Ah, and speaking of remembering, this month we have another special announcement about the annual Shirley Martin Scholarship for Young Songwriters. Applications are being accepted until April 15th, and are open to songwriters age 14-19 in 14 different Indiana counties. There is a $500 cash prize, and all entries will receive feedback on their original song. Check samisong.com for more details!
Acoustic Blend airs Saturday, March 12 at 8pm EST on WBAA AM 920 in Lafayette / West Lafayette, and streaming live on wbaa.org. You can view the full playlist above. ‘Til next month!
If you are new to Sarah Jarosz you can check out this live set that I highlighted earlier in the week. Give a listen to the song “Comin’ Undone.” So good!
