This month’s show is one from the archives. I find myself humming some of these tunes every year when October rolls around, and great stories (like great songs) never get old. Look for some additional commentary on the power of story next week along with a replay via Spotify.
This month our theme is stories that shape us, and I am delighted to feature one of my favorite storytellers, Richard Shindell. I appreciate how much of a wordsmith he is, as is evidenced by this recent origin story for one of his songs. The end result is a song that you can get lost in, and we’ll hear a few of those from him throughout the hour.
As we venture through our show I'll be reviewing the elements of a good story, per Donald Miller and A Million Miles in a Thousand Years (hint: a character who wants something and overcomes conflict to get it). I'll also share a poem (“Ask Me” by William Stafford) that I first discovered while reading Parker Palmer's Let Your Life Speak.
We’ll wind down the hour with Andrew Peterson offering a hopeful chorus that I want to put on repeat and sing until it gets into my bones:
So tell me the story I still need to hear
Tell me we're gonna make it out alive again
I need to know there's nothing left to fear
There's nothing left to hide
So will you look me in the eye
And say we will survive
