This month on Acoustic Blend we are pulling a peaceful medley out of the archives, with an episode about unconditional love and the peace that comes with it. I often need a reminder of my belovedness, and songs like Andy Gullahorn’s “Your Worst Day” and “Not Bad Enough” bring me back to my senses and back to the people I’m closest to.
This episode features a reading of the poem “Love Does That” by Meister Eckhart, and (back in 2020) marked the first time that I played around with combining poetry and music. The full poem is below, and I just love the image of the kind monk looking into the burro’s eyes. I pause on that line every time I sit with this and breathe in the rest that comes from a loving gaze.
All day long a little burro labors, sometimes with heavy loads on her back and sometimes just with worries about things that bother only burros. And worries, as we know, can be more exhausting than physical labor. Once in a while a kind monk comes to her stable and brings a pear, but more than that, he looks into the burro’s eyes and touches her ears and for a few seconds the burro is free and even seems to laugh, because love does that. Love frees. "Love Does That" by Meister Eckhart
When you listen live you can hear my reading of it along with music from Cageless Birds, somewhere around the 40-minute mark of the show. Enjoy!
