Welcome to Acoustic Blend with Barrett Myers. New episodes air each month on the second Saturday at 8pm on WBAA. I’m here to make good art, share great music, and be a little oasis of peace and good vibes. Please consider sharing this post, pledging a subscription, or gifting a coffee to spread the love. Thanks for tuning in!
We are entering a new year, and for me that means breaking out all of my various journals to reflect on the past year and dream about what’s next. Therefore I’ll be offering some reflective space on Acoustic Blend to look back, look forward, and look within.
And for something a little different, this month’s full episode is available on Spotify, complete with my commentary and an additional introduction where I describe my new year journaling practices (some of which are inspired by Emily P. Freeman and The Next Right Thing Guided Journal). Note: if you don’t have a Spotify subscription, the link below may only play the first 30 seconds of each song. In that case, the full playlist at the bottom should still do the trick for you.
Once Richard Shindell and Jess Ray get us rolling, we’ll have a pair of tunes about grandfathers from Tyrone Wells and Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors. Reflecting on my grandfather’s life fills me with hope and offers new perspective any time of year, but especially so now. Here’s a song about my grandfather’s life that I shared a couple years ago called “Someone Must Have Wanted Me.” That’s my beautiful and talented wife on background vocals.
I couldn’t create a show on reflection and perspective without including music from Andy Gullahorn and Andrew Peterson, and they’re joined this hour by local artist Michael Longcor and his song, “It’s a Tunnel Not a Cave.” You may or may not be aware that Michael is in the filk hall of fame (2014).
We’ll pause near the end of the hour for a reading of “For a new beginning” by John O’Donahue, accompanied by friend and fellow Indiana-based artist Chase Cotten.
Acoustic Blend airs Saturday, January 14 at 8pm EDT on WBAA AM 920 in Lafayette / West Lafayette, and streaming live on wbaa.org. You can view the full playlist below. ‘Til next month!
Reflection is always a path to understanding, loved these tunes and made me happy to know we do have good times to remember and more to come.
