It's August and time for another installment of Acoustic Blend!
This month I'm excited to host my first covers show (inspired in part by Drew & Ellie Holcomb's Kitchen Covers series), featuring some of my favorite takes on popular songs.
With so many talented songwriters to choose from it was difficult to spotlight an artist for this month, but I'm going to name John Prine as our featured artist for August. There's a certain John Prine song that I tend to perform at nearly every live performance, so that gave him the edge in my book.
Our bonus track for August is this cover of “Rude” by Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox. If you want a fun rabbit hole for your Friday afternoon, go dig through some of Scott Bradlee's covers. There are lots of them, and the album Historical Misappropriation is a fine place to start. If you're in the mood for something a little more mellow try Audrey Assad's take on the Jimmy Eat World song “The Middle.” And send me a reply or leave a comment below with your favorite cover...there are so many good ones out there!
Acoustic Blend airs this Saturday, August 8 at 8pm EDT on WBAA AM 920 in Lafayette / West Lafayette, and streaming live on wbaa.org. You can view the playlist at barrettmyers.com and below, once the show airs. ‘Til next month!
PS… the above playlist is missing Richard Shindell’s version of Sonora’s Death Row — the track featured on the show is from The Sonora Sessions, released in 2002.
